Grandma Moses was a famous artist, but she never had a formal lesson. She started painting when she was in her 70’s and remained active until near her death.

Anna Mary Robertson and her nine brothers and sisters were born in Washington County, New York in 1860. She was named for her mother’s sisters and also her nickname was Sissy. Anna worked on the farm, and   sometimes she had to feed the chickens, milk the cows, gather eggs, and weed the garden. Anna did not like sewing that much, but she liked to knit pretty lace.

She left home when she was only 12 years old,

To earn a living work as a hired girl for a family nearby. She worked for 15 years.

Anna Mary Robertson parents were hard working farm people. Her father was a dreamer and a painter. Like her father Anna loved beautiful things.  In 1886 on a November after Anna did house keeping for a family named James she was 26 years old at the time.  She met her husband on this farm and started a butter business. After the butter business her husband and she moved to Virginia and she had a chip business. In 1887 Anna Mary Robertson and Thomas Moses got married in Hoosick Falls, They had ten kids but only five lived. Some of her children moved away and some stayed close by.  Anna Mary Robertson started to paint again. She sometimes painted on different materials fireboard and painted for presents to give people. Anna Mary Robertson did not take painting very seriously. Her husband died in 1927. Hough in February died when she was 88 years old.  She painted landscapes and she liked to use lots of color to do in the summer and scenes, winter with barns, brides, and often flowers. The pictures she started with were made out of yarn .She used yarn until she had arthritis so she started painting instead of using yarn. Grandma Moses truly inspired other people to paint.
