Listen to AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. SEUSS

Propasal

I want to do Theodor Seuss Geisel for Famous Americans because he is a great writer and illustrator.  Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Some of the books he wrote include- And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street, Horton Hatches the Egg, Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Yertle the Turtle, and Oh the Places You’ll Go!   I would like to learn more about how Seuss got started on writing.  Another reason I want to do Dr. Seuss is because we have the same birthday and also my mom used to read me his books when I was little and we read How the Grinch Stole Christmas  every year at Christmas time.

Report

A person is a person no matter how small.”  Dr. Seuss said that in his book Horton Hears a Who!  It shows how much he cared about all people.  He wrote over 65 books for children and adults with topics ranging from zoos and circuses, taking care of the Earth, nuclear war, and teaching first graders to read.

Picture this: it was March 2, 1904 Theodor Seuss-Geisel was born.  Theodor Seuss-Geisel was born in a German-American family, his dad (Theodor Geisel) was a brewer, and his mom (Henrietta Seuss) was a housewife.  He had one sister named Marine Seuss-Geisel.  They lived in a house on Fairfield Street in Springfield, Massachusetts and he went to a local primary school.  When WWI broke out he got excluded from everything because he was German and at that time we were fighting German.  His only friend was his sister.  Everyone hated the Seuss-Geisel so they did everything they could to help “our boys”.  They planted a Liberty Garden so they didn’t have to buy vegetables so they could send them to the troops.  They Baked Liberty Bread made from whole wheat so that the pure flower could be sent to the troops.  Theodor Seuss-Geisel even joined Boy Scouts so he could protect his town when the men were away; he even sold Liberty Bonds so that the money from selling them would go towards things for the troops.  He sold so many Liberty Bonds that he was tenth highest seller in his city.  The medals were going to be presented by President Roosevelt!  When he walked across the stage there weren’t enough medals for him so he was rushed off the stage.  It was his most embarrassing moment!  When there was talk of prohibition of alcohol Ted’s family was scared that they would not make any money anymore because their whole business was brewing.  When the 18th amendment was passed the family’s brewery closed for good.  When he got into high school, he had an English teacher that inspired him to want to become an English professor and go to Dartmouth College.  Then Oxford University in England where he met his future wife.

After Helen Palmer and he got married, they moved to a little apartment in NYC where he drew comics for Flit, a popular bug spray.  They loved to travel so after they were all settled in they took a trip to Europe.  There they saw how much damage the war had caused.  On the way back to New York he wrote his first book to the sound of the boats engine.  It was called And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street.  He sent it to 27 publishers and they all rejected it but the 28th (Random House) accepted it. They promised to publish every book he ever made.

One day a breeze came through the window and when he got up to close the window and when he came back it looked like there was an elephant on a nest and that was the birth of Horton.  At this time he had sold about ten books and was quite wealthy.  So he and his wife moved to Ja Holla, California.  Where his wife was diagnosed with a nerve disease and was paralyzed from the waist down and was confined to a wheel chair.  A few weeks later his publisher asked him if he wanted a challenge.  Of course he said yes.  The challenge was writing a book using all the words first graders needed to learn to read, they would send the list in the mail. When he got the list he told his wife (even though she couldn’t understand him) that there were no adjectives, but that didn’t stop him.  He looked for words that rhymed like cat and hat.  That was how The Cat in the Hat came to be.

Helen was getting better even though the doctor said she would never get better.  They loved to have parties and Dr. Diamond and Audrey Diamond were frequent guests.  Dr. Diamond was the one who diagnosed Helen’s disease.  Audrey was as fun, outgoing, and had as

much a love of travel as Ted.  Ted knew something no one else knew.  Audrey and the Dr.’s marriage was in jeopardy.  One day Helen got up before Ted and took enough pain killers to end her life.  Everyone was shocked about Helen’s death.  After a few years Ted and Audrey got married.  They traveled all over.  Ted was getting older and felt like he was holding her back but he never told her that.  As he got older he never wanted to leave his office so he had a bed moved in there.  He died of natural causes on September 24, 1991.

Dr. Seuss is dearly missed and his books will live on forever.  So now you know all about him.  I hope you enjoyed learning about this wonderful man.
