Listen to AN INTERVIEW

Harriet Beecher Stowe had to face the loss of her mother (had tuberculosis) at the age of five.  Living through this made her the strong woman that would became.

Harriet Beecher Stowe was born on June 14, 1811in Litchfield Connecticut.

Harriet hardly knew her mother because of her death when Harriet was very young.  Harriet’s family moved west to Cincinnati, Ohio when the slaves were being brought over on the steam boats.

Harriet Beecher Stowe saw slaves being mistreated by their owners when she was walking home from work.  One of Harriet’s dreams was to write and to get her books published.  That way everyone could read her wonderful words from her book.                                                          Harriet’s family members were William, Edward, George, and Henry Ward.

On January 6, 1811 Calvin and Harriet got married and lived in Cincinnati Ohio.  Calvin and Eliza were married but then Eliza died and then Harriet married Calvin. Calvin and Eliza were friends of Harriet’s and when Eliza died Harriet and Calvin got married.

Harriet worked at a seminary for females.  Harriet and Calvin had seven kids and their names were Eliza and Harriet (1836), Henry Ellis (1838), Fredrick William (1840), Georgina May (1843), Samuel (1848), and Charles Edward (1850).

Harriet’s mom Roxanna died of tuberculosis when Harriet was only five and it was a hard life for her after that.  When Harriet just got so mad and against slavery. She wanted to put all her anger on a sheet of paper and it turned out to be a book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin.   When people read this book it changed the way they felt about slavery and caused them to fight the civil war.

Harriet is famous because she wrote the book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin. People wanted to fight for freedom and fight the civil war.  She improved life for lots of people because slavery was very common and her book made people change the way they felt about it.  Lots of people were happier that slavery was over because they got reunited with friends, family and relatives.
